fraymedia Foundation awards inaugural entrepreneur grant

Join the foundation and our keynote speaker Phathiswa Magopeni and meet five incredible small business owners – women who have taken the plunge and founded their own media ventures.

The recipient of the foundation's inaugural The EntreprenHER grant will be announced at the event on Monday 18 November.

Our five finalists for the grant completed a six-month professional development programme with five other participants. Each of the 10 participants pitched their business ideas and plans to a panel of judges. One of these five tenacious entreprenHERS will be awarded a R50 000 grant to boost their business.

Our five finalists are:

  • Anetta Mangxaba – Co-founder of Dizindaba Media (Pty) Ltd, dedicated to empowering isiXhosa-speaking communities through impactful media.

  • Melini Moses – With over 20 years in communications, Melini has led a team at SABC and founded Express Yourself, a business focused on innovative media solutions.

  • Moipone Malefane – An aspiring entrepreneur who balances her passion for media with family, working to build a successful media business.

  • Nomthandazo Shai – A seasoned editor with nine years of experience in a community newspaper, Nomthandazo is committed to amplifying local voices.

  • Pamela Timakwe – A rural entrepreneur advocating for women in the Eastern Cape, Pamela has launched the Eastern Cape Women’s Magazine to highlight women's issues.

The grant recipient was selected by a formidable panel of judges:

  • Saaleha Idrees Bamjee – award-winning poet, writer, photographer, founder of shootcake

  • Makgotso Letsitsi – a charted accountant and experienced finance professional

Verashni Pillay – a former journalist, editor, and founder of explain.co.za

The EntreprenHER – a pilot programme the foundation launched in March – aims to encourage, support and skill-up women media entrepreneurs. It provided selected accredited business and management courses to 10 qualifying women, culminating in the opportunity to secure a modest grant to support or help establish their media ventures. This pilot programme was funded through bursaries from MiH Holdings Pty Ltd, and aims to be a catalyst for individual success and transformation in the industry.  The foundation hopes to use all the lessons learned to refine the programme and establish it as a flagship entrepreneur support initiative.

“As we look to the future, fraymedia Foundation is committed to initiatives like The EntreprenHER, which focus on creating and supporting women media owners in South Africa and beyond,” says Charmeela Bhagowat, Co-Founder and Interim CEO of fraymedia Foundation.

Let us celebrate our courageous entreprenHERS. Join us as we announce the winner on 18 November at 10 am SAST.
