Developing media and management skills

fraymedia Foundation has partnered with ThisAbility newspaper and fraycollege to

to deliver the second of a three-year skills development programme for aspiring journalists and managers with disabilities, with a range of Seta-accredited courses.

The online programme this year, funded by MiH Holdings Pty Ltd, began on 1 March 2024 with five women participants from across the country.

The development programme was first launched in 2015 by Media24 in collaboration with ThisAbility and the first year of the programme in 2023 - as with the previous cohorts of participants - were funded by Media24. More than 50 journalists with disabilities have been trained so far and this year all five of the participants in their second year are women.

Palesa Matlala, documentary and photojournalist. Photo: supplied

Palesa Matlala is a photojournalist and documentary photographer. Prior to joining Health-E News, she was an intern at Bhekisisa Centre of Health journalism. She wrote for ThisAbility Newspaper focusing on disability activism. She formed part of a research team for the SABC 2 disability magazine Activated. Her interests are telling community health stories,focusing on mental health, women's health and early childhood development, with the aim of informing and educating her readers.

Nkaba Catherine Molamu is a dedicated and inspirational figure in the field of media and

disability advocacy. Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Media Studies at the

University of Limpopo, she has consistently demonstrated a commitment to

empowering disabled individuals through various professional and academic

endeavours. Her professional journey includes significant contributions to Thisability Newspaper., working as a student assistant at the Reakgona Disability Centre which supports students with disabilities in navigating the academic environment and accessing necessary resources.

Founder of the Maduvha Ha Fani Academy, Mudau promotes inclusive early childhood education in the community of Nzhelele in Limpopo. At Maduvha Ha Fani Academy, children are encouraged to explore, learn, and grow. Our innovative curriculum is designed to promote holistic development, focusing on the social, emotional, and physical growth of each child. As the owner of Maduvha Ha Fani Academy, I am committed to pursuing professional development, staying current with the latest research and best practices in early childhood  education.

Mamaswa Precious Ralefeta is a passionate advocate for disability rights with a background in radio broadcasting, journalism and research. Holding a degree in BA Arts and currently pursuing a diploma in Information Studies, she has dedicated her career to raising awareness and promoting inclusion for individuals living with disabilities. With experience as a researcher for a disability magazine TV show, as well as volunteering as a librarian, she continues to be a voice for marginalised communities and a champion for accessibility in all areas of society.

Zizipho Soldat is a physically disabled lifestyle influencer who advocates for rights of the disabled through freelance writing and has obtained an local award as a filmmaker .She stands for inclusion & integration with an aim to promote disability awareness and equality .
